THE WEEKLY ENCOURAGER 7 February 2010         (From James Stacey: scriptural advice and insight on how to be set free from schizophrenia)                                 ARISE AND PRAY YOURSELF OUT OF SCHIZOPHRENIA!!   THIS WEEK’S SELECTED BIBLE READING IS JOHN’S GOSPEL CHAPTER 6 Key verses 35-40: Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty. But as I told you, you have seen me and still you do not believe. All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never drive away. For I have come down from heaven not to do my will but to do the will of him who sent me. And this is the will of him who sent me, that I shall lose none of all that he has given me, but raise them up at the last day. For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.” I have been filled with overflowing gratitude to the Lord Jesus Christ throughout this week over coming to know him as my personal Saviour at 14 years-old in 1956, a number of years before the bondage of schizophrenia assailed my life. My upbringing of being sent to Sunday School, getting involved in running a Methodist youth club at 16 and later deciding to go to Bible College helped establish me in a living faith in Jesus. By the time I went reeling into a severe psychotic state on a beautifully bright summer day way back in 1965, I had already got my roots into Jesus and he into me. I am so glad it was that way, though, and I didn’t have to depend for my main help during the following 26 years of bondage to the medical world of psychiatry. Jesus became my Master Physician from Day One when in a maze of confusion and spiritual darkness I did not know which way to turn or what to do. The only measure of sanity I was able to keep came my way through hanging on to the scriptures in the Bible, particularly the precious words spoken by Jesus. They were “spirit and life” to me, as he said they would be (see verse 63). Common questions on your lips, and in your heart, are: “How do I maintain my sanity while enduring this mental oppression of schizophrenia – and, more importantly, how do I get rid of its uncomfortable presence in my life?” I’ve been there!! Let me commend a way to you. It is all found in Jesus, in knowing him. When by faith you receive him into your life – having first confessed you are a sinner in need of his forgiveness, and accept his death and resurrection on The Cross of Calvary for YOU, the gift of the Holy Spirit, the living presence of Jesus will be given to you. Knowing Jesus, then helps you to pray and understand the Holy Bible – which is like no other book. As my testimony has shown, I had the presence of the Holy Spirit in my life before my illness went into full bloom in my early twenties. Without that power I would have been unable to fight the evil presence of schizophrenia. I also had a tremendously long period after healing and deliverance had taken place to allow myself to "catch up" on 26 years in which I had not developed and grown normally. BUT GOD DID IT! The years after healing and deliverance were times of slow but definite progress, requiring most of all a dependency on the Holy Spirit to teach, correct, inspire and show those things I needed to know. And it shall come to pass that whosoever shall call
on the name of the Lord shall be delivered (Joel 2:32)

Why do not I call on His name? Why do I run to this neighbour and that when God is so near and will hear my faintest call? Why do I sit down and devise schemes and invent plans? Why not at once roll myself and my burden upon the Lord?

Straightforward is the best runner – why do not I run at once to the living God? In vain shall I look for deliverance anywhere else; but with God I shall find it; For here I have His royal shall to make it sure. I need not ask whether I may call on Him or not, for that word “Whosoever” is a very wide and comprehensive one. Whosoever means me, for it means anybody and everybody who calls upon God. I will therefore follow the leading of the text, and at once call upon the glorious Lord who has made so large a promise.

My case is urgent, and I do not see how I am to be delivered; but this is no business of mine. He who makes the promise will find ways and means of keeping it. It is mine to obey His commands; it is not mine to direct His counsels. I am His servant, not His solicitor. I call upon Him, and He will deliver.
